Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Hazardous Waste Program Development Training.

Hazardous Waste Program Development training is an online environmental compliance education program that teaches participants how to build and manage a facility-level hazardous waste program under EPA RCRA regulations. It provides 2 hours of instruction covering generator classifications, accumulation requirements, labeling, contingency planning, and documentation. The course is aligned with 40 CFR Parts 260–273 and is designed for managers, supervisors, and compliance personnel. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
Federal EPA RCRA regulations require facilities that generate hazardous waste to manage that waste in accordance with 40 CFR Parts 260–273, which includes maintaining trained personnel responsible for program oversight. While RCRA does not mandate a specific course, facilities classified as Small Quantity Generators (SQG) or Large Quantity Generators (LQG) are required to ensure that personnel who manage hazardous waste are trained to do so safely and in compliance with federal regulations. Employers, facility managers, and EHS teams often require this training to satisfy those obligations and prepare staff for inspection readiness.
The course requires a minimum of 2 hours of instruction time. Because it is fully self-paced, you can complete it across multiple sessions at your convenience. You have 6 months from your enrollment date to complete all coursework. Progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and resume on any device without losing your place.

The course covers the following topics: hazardous waste identification and determination procedures; EPA RCRA regulatory framework (40 CFR Parts 260–273); generator classification categories — Very Small Quantity Generator (VSQG), Small Quantity Generator (SQG), and Large Quantity Generator (LQG); accumulation time limits and on-site storage requirements; proper labeling and container management standards; contingency planning and emergency response procedures; inspection protocols and recordkeeping practices; and documentation requirements for regulatory compliance. The course is structured as a self-paced online program divided into focused modules covering each of these core compliance areas.

Generator classification under EPA RCRA is based on the amount of hazardous waste a facility generates per calendar month. Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG) generate no more than 100 kilograms of hazardous waste per month and are subject to the least stringent requirements. Small Quantity Generators (SQG) generate between 100 and 1,000 kilograms per month and face intermediate requirements for storage time, contingency planning, and training. Large Quantity Generators (LQG) generate 1,000 kilograms or more per month and are subject to the most comprehensive RCRA compliance obligations. This course covers the specific requirements applicable to all three classifications.
You must score at least 70% to pass. You have 3 attempts to achieve a passing score. If you do not pass within 3 attempts, please contact eTraining's support team for assistance. Feedback is provided to help you review the material before retaking.
