Everything you need to know about the HAZMAT Labeling.

This is an interactive online training course designed to help facilities comply with OSHA’s HAZWOPER regulation (29 CFR 1910.120). It teaches employees about different hazardous materials labeling systems and how to use these systems to identify hazards and reduce or eliminate potential exposure in their work environments.
This course is approximately 45 to 60 minutes long and is designed for workers who remove hazardous waste, or are exposed or potentially exposed to any kind of hazardous substance or health hazard in the course of their work.
The course covers OSHA labeling requirements, DOT “Hazard Class” labels and placards, the Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS), target organ information labels, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Labeling System, and hazardous waste labels.
The course covers the four labeling systems most often used to identify hazardous materials in the United States. These include the DOT Hazard Class system (for transportation), the HMIS (Hazardous Materials Identification System), the NFPA Labeling System, and OSHA’s hazard communication labeling requirements. Each system uses different formats and codes to communicate specific hazard information.
OSHA and other government organizations require containers of hazardous materials to be labeled so that workers can quickly identify what substances they are working with, understand the specific hazards associated with those substances, and take appropriate precautions. Proper labeling is essential for preventing accidental exposure, spills, and health effects.
The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) Labeling System uses a diamond-shaped label with four colored sections to communicate health hazards (blue), flammability (red), instability/reactivity (yellow), and special hazards (white). Each section uses a numerical rating from 0 to 4 to indicate the severity of the hazard. The course explains how to read and interpret these labels.
