eTraining’s 24-Hour HAZWOPER Course is an OSHA-compliant online training program developed from the hazardous waste operations standard 29 CFR 1910.120.

The 24-hour HAZWOPER course is designed for workers who have limited exposure to hazardous substances but still participate in clean-up operations, work at hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities, or respond to controlled emergency situations involving hazardous materials. Unlike the 40-hour HAZWOPER course (designed for general site workers with full hazard exposure), the 24-hour version is appropriate for workers in support roles or those with occasional site access.

This comprehensive course covers 6 main units, including environmental laws and regulations, OSHA regulations, site hazards (Focus Four, fall protection, excavations, electrical safety), protection from site hazards (scaffolds, confined space, PPE), and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards.

Upon completion with a 70% passing score, participants receive a personalized certificate. Annual 8-hour refresher training is required to maintain certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the 24 Hour Hazwoper Online Course.

24-hour HAZWOPER training is an OSHA-required course under 29 CFR 1910.120 for workers who have limited exposure to hazardous substances at hazardous waste sites but still participate in cleanup operations, work at treatment/storage/disposal (TSD) facilities, or assist in controlled emergency response situations. The 24-hour course covers environmental laws, OSHA regulations, site hazard identification, fall protection, electrical safety, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards.
The 40-hour HAZWOPER course is required for general site workers who are directly involved with hazardous substance handling and have full exposure to site hazards. The 24-hour course is for workers with limited or occasional exposure who perform support roles. Both are governed by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. The 40-hour course requires 3 days of supervised field experience; the 24-hour course requires 1 day (8 hours). Both require annual 8-hour refresher training to maintain certification.
24-hour HAZWOPER training is required for: workers at hazardous waste cleanup sites who have limited exposure to hazardous substances, workers at TSD facilities in support roles, workers involved in controlled emergency response operations, occasional site visitors to hazardous waste operations, and any employee designated by their employer as needing 24-hour level training based on their job duties and exposure levels.
eTraining’s 24-Hour HAZWOPER course requires a minimum of 24 hours of instruction. The course is self-paced, so most students complete it over 1–2 weeks. You can pause and resume at any time on the same device. After completing the online portion, your employer must provide 1 day (8 hours) of supervised field experience.
Yes. HAZWOPER certification requires annual renewal through an 8-hour refresher course. If your certification lapses (more than 12 months without a refresher), you must retake the full 24-hour course to recertify. eTraining offers the 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher course, updated annually to reflect the latest regulatory changes.
Yes. eTraining’s 24-Hour HAZWOPER course covers all knowledge-based training requirements under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120. OSHA also requires employers to provide 1 day (8 hours) of supervised field experience after completing the online training portion. The combination of online education plus employer-provided field experience meets OSHA’s requirements.
The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards is a reference guide published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) that provides key chemical identification data, exposure limits, health hazards, and recommendations for personal protection for over 670 chemicals. eTraining’s 24-Hour HAZWOPER course includes an entire unit dedicated to understanding and using the NIOSH Pocket Guide, including reading exposure limits, vapor pressures, flammability data, and PPE selection.
After completing the 24-hour online course, your employer must provide 1 day (8 hours) of supervised field experience under the direct supervision of a trained, experienced supervisor. This field training covers hands-on use of PPE, decontamination procedures, and site-specific hazard recognition. The online course provides the knowledge base; the field experience provides practical application.
If your job duties change and you need full 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, you will need to complete the full 40-Hour HAZWOPER course. The 24-hour course cannot simply be “upgraded” with additional hours because the 40-hour course covers more extensive content including additional days of supervised field experience (3 days vs. 1 day). eTraining offers the 40-Hour HAZWOPER course separately.
Upon passing eTraining’s 24-Hour HAZWOPER course, you receive a personalized certificate of completion that includes your name, course name, completion date, and certificate number. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(6) requires a written certificate be given to each person who completes HAZWOPER training. Your employer can verify your certificate through eTraining’s verification system.
