This is an interactive online training course designed to help facilities comply with OSHA’s HAZWOPER regulation (29 CFR 1910.120). It teaches employees how to reduce or eliminate potential exposure to hazardous materials through proper decontamination procedures, including zone management, equipment use, and step-by-step decontamination processes.
The course covers why OSHA requires decontamination for workers exposed to hazardous materials, the tools, equipment, and materials used in the decontamination process, why chemical incident sites are separated into zones (exclusion zone, contamination reduction zone, contamination reduction corridor), work practices and engineering controls, personal protective equipment, decontamination equipment and solutions, and detailed decontamination procedures.
OSHA requires decontamination to protect workers from the harmful effects of hazardous materials exposure. When workers come into contact with hazardous substances, proper decontamination removes or neutralizes those substances to prevent continued exposure, cross-contamination, and health effects. This is mandated under 29 CFR 1910.120.
Chemical incident sites are divided into zones to control the spread of contamination. The exclusion zone is the area of highest contamination. The contamination reduction zone is a buffer area where decontamination activities take place. The contamination reduction corridor is the specific path workers follow through the decontamination process before entering the clean support zone.
