This asbestos awareness training course is for people who work around asbestos-containing material without being sent to disturb it, which is what OSHA calls Class 4 work.

Which Asbestos Course: Class 4 Awareness or Class 1 to 3?

What your crew is allowed to touch decides which asbestos course they need. Class 4 is contact without disturbance. Work that disturbs asbestos-containing material sits in a higher class with a longer training requirement.

If anyone on the crew is directed to remove, repair or encapsulate asbestos-containing material, that is Class 1, 2 or 3 work and it carries a longer training requirement. Your scope of work says which.

 

Does OSHA Require Asbestos Awareness Training?

Yes. OSHA requires at least 2 hours of asbestos training for every employee who performs Class 4 asbestos work, and the paragraph that says so is 29 CFR 1926.1101(k)(9)(vi).

  • The duty sits on the employer, not the worker. Paragraph (k)(9)(i) tells employers to train each employee who performs Class 1 through Class 4 asbestos work. Buying the course is how a manager discharges that.
  • Class 4 means contact without disturbance. Maintenance and custodial work where employees touch asbestos-containing material without disturbing it, plus clearing the dust and debris other classes leave behind. That definition is what puts a crew in this course rather than a longer one.
  • The standard lists what the training has to contain. Ten items, from health effects and the smoking connection through respirator limits, work practices, medical surveillance and what asbestos signs and labels mean. Paragraph (k)(9)(viii) sets them out and the four parts work through all ten.
  • School districts answer to a second rule as well. EPA requires a local education agency to give its maintenance and custodial staff at least 2 hours of awareness training under 40 CFR 763.92(a)(1), whether or not they ever work with the material.

Two hours, a paragraph number, and a dated certificate with a name on it. That is what a safety file needs on the day someone asks who on the crew has been trained.

Asbestos awareness training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to recognize, avoid, and report asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in the workplace. eTraining’s course provides approximately 2 hours of instruction covering OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 standards, including what asbestos is, where it is commonly found, the health effects of exposure (asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer), OSHA work classifications (Class I through Class IV), permissible exposure limits, and proper response procedures. Training must be provided at initial assignment and annually thereafter. The EPA also requires asbestos awareness training under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) for certain workers in schools and public buildings.

The Asbestos Awareness course is designed for workers who may encounter ACM in the course of their normal work duties (Class IV activities such as maintenance and custodial work). It covers hazard recognition and avoidance. The Asbestos Safety for the Competent Person course is a more in-depth program for individuals who will be designated as the competent person on asbestos-related job sites, covering detailed identification methods, regulatory compliance requirements, oversight responsibilities, and the authority to stop work when asbestos hazards are identified.
