Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the 8 Hour HAZWOPER Refresher.

The HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refresher is an annual refresher training program required by OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) and 29 CFR 1926.65(e)(8). It provides 8 hours of updated instruction on hazardous waste operations, including hazard recognition, toxicology, air monitoring, decontamination procedures, engineering controls, and current environmental law updates. The refresher is required annually for workers who have completed the initial OSHA 40-Hour or 24-Hour HAZWOPER training. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
Any worker who has completed the OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER or 24-Hour HAZWOPER initial training and continues to work in hazardous waste operations or is exposed to hazardous substances must complete 8 hours of annual refresher training (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8)). This includes hazardous waste site workers, TSDF employees, emergency responders, and any worker covered by the HAZWOPER standard. The refresher must be completed within 12 months of the last training date.
The course requires a minimum of 8 hours of instruction time. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it over multiple sessions at your convenience. Most students finish within 1 to 2 weeks. You have 6 months from your enrollment date to complete all coursework. Progress is saved automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
The course covers: environmental law updates and regulatory changes; hazard recognition and assessment; toxicology and chemical characteristics; air monitoring methods and equipment; engineering controls for hazardous operations; chemical decontamination procedures; site characterization and analysis; personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements; emergency response procedures; and real-world case studies of hazardous waste incidents. The content is updated annually to reflect current regulations and industry developments.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. The course includes knowledge-check quizzes throughout to help prepare you for the final exam. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.
Yes. eTraining’s HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refresher meets the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) and 29 CFR 1926.65(e)(8) for annual refresher training. OSHA has confirmed that computer-based training is acceptable for HAZWOPER refresher courses when it covers relevant topics and is supplemented by the opportunity to ask questions of a qualified trainer. You receive a printable certificate accepted by employers, unions, and regulatory agencies nationwide across all 50 U.S. states.
Yes. The HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refresher course works on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Your progress is saved automatically on the same device you are using, allowing you to pause and pick up where you left off. Note: you must continue on the same device to retain your saved progress.
If more than 12 months pass since your last HAZWOPER refresher or initial training, your certification lapses. OSHA does not have a specific regulation that states the exact consequences, but OSHA has indicated that employers should use their judgment. In practice, many employers and safety professionals require workers with lapsed certifications to retake the full 40-Hour or 24-Hour initial training. It is strongly recommended to complete your 8-Hour Refresher before the 12-month deadline to avoid this situation.
The 40-Hour HAZWOPER course is the initial training required for workers involved in hazardous waste site cleanup and related operations. It is a comprehensive, one-time course covering all HAZWOPER requirements. The 8-Hour Refresher is the annual follow-up training that keeps workers current on updated regulations, new hazards, and best practices. Workers must first complete the 40-Hour (or 24-Hour, depending on their role) initial training before they are eligible to take the 8-Hour Refresher.
Yes. eTraining offers a complete HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refresher course in Spanish as a separate course. The Spanish version covers the same content, meets the same OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(8) and 29 CFR 1926.65(e)(8) requirements, and results in the same certificate of completion.
