Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Rigging Training Course.

Rigging training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to properly attach (rig) loads to cranes and hoisting equipment for safe lifting. The course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 (Cranes and Derricks in Construction) and 29 CFR 1926.753 (Rigging Training for Steel Erection), including rigging equipment types, inspection procedures, load calculations, and safe rigging practices. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400, Subpart CC, workers who perform rigging tasks on construction sites where cranes and derricks are in use must be qualified. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.753 specifically requires rigging training for steel erection workers. Employers are responsible for ensuring all riggers are qualified before they attach loads to cranes or hoisting equipment. Many employers require documented rigging training for all workers involved in crane lifting operations.
The course is approximately 3–4 hours in length and is divided into 4 parts. Because it is fully self-paced, you can complete it over multiple sessions at your convenience. Progress saves automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
A rigger is responsible for attaching (rigging) loads to the crane for lifting, including selecting and inspecting rigging equipment such as slings, shackles, and hooks. A signal person is responsible for directing the crane operator during load movement using standardized hand signals or voice communication. These are separate roles with different OSHA qualification requirements under 29 CFR 1926.1400, Subpart CC. Some workers may fill both roles, but each requires its own training.
You must score 70% or higher on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate. Knowledge check quizzes are provided throughout the 4 course parts to help prepare you for the final exam. If you do not pass, you may reattempt the final exam.
Yes. eTraining’s Rigging Training course has specific equivalent coverage to prepare candidates for the NCCCO Rigger Level I written examination. The course covers the knowledge areas tested on the NCCCO exam, including riggfaing equipment, inspection procedures, load handling, and safe rigging practices. The NCCCO exam itself is administered separately by NCCCO.
Yes. The course is accessible on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. It is fully self-paced, so you can complete it on any device at your own speed. Progress saves automatically on the same device, allowing you to pick up where you left off.
The course covers definitions and terminology, hazard recognition, crane types and classifications, the updated OSHA Subpart CC standard, site operations, employer responsibilities, crane components and setup, load movement and hoisting, emergency response, types, selection, and use of rigging materials, rigging material inspection procedures, wire rope, connectors, and slings, chain slings, and synthetic slings.
Yes. eTraining’s Rigging Training course is built from and adheres to OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 (Cranes and Derricks in Construction, Subpart CC) and 29 CFR 1926.753 (Rigging Training for Steel Erection).
