Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Asbestos Awareness Course.

Asbestos awareness training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to recognize, avoid, and report asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in the workplace. eTraining’s course provides approximately 2 hours of instruction covering OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 standards, including what asbestos is, where it is commonly found, the health effects of exposure (asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer), OSHA work classifications (Class I through Class IV), permissible exposure limits, and proper response procedures. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 requires employers to provide asbestos awareness training to all employees who perform Class IV asbestos work (maintenance and custodial activities that may contact ACM or presumed ACM) and to any employee who works in areas where ACM or PACM is present. Training must be provided at initial assignment and annually thereafter. The EPA also requires asbestos awareness training under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) for certain workers in schools and public buildings.
The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it over multiple sessions at your convenience. Most students finish within a few days. You have 6 months from your enrollment date to complete all coursework. Progress is saved automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
The course covers: what asbestos is and its physical properties; common locations where ACM is found (insulation, floor tiles, roofing, pipe wrap, drywall); health effects of asbestos exposure including asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer; OSHA asbestos work classifications (Class I, II, III, and IV); permissible exposure limits (PEL) and excursion limits; personal protective equipment for asbestos work; proper procedures when ACM is encountered or accidentally disturbed; regulatory requirements under OSHA and the EPA; and employer and employee responsibilities.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. The course includes knowledge-check quizzes throughout to help prepare you for the final exam. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.

The Asbestos Awareness course is designed for workers who may encounter ACM in the course of their normal work duties (Class IV activities such as maintenance and custodial work). It covers hazard recognition and avoidance. The Asbestos Safety for the Competent Person course is a more in-depth program for individuals who will be designated as the competent person on asbestos-related job sites, covering detailed identification methods, regulatory compliance requirements, oversight responsibilities, and the authority to stop work when asbestos hazards are identified.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 requires that asbestos awareness training be provided annually. Workers who may be exposed to asbestos must complete refresher training at least once every 12 months after initial training. Employers should ensure that all covered employees maintain current annual training documentation.
Yes. eTraining offers a complete Asbestos Awareness course in Spanish (Asbestos Safety Awareness – Spanish). The Spanish version covers the same content, meets the same OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 requirements, and results in the same certificate of completion.
Yes. eTraining’s Asbestos Awareness course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 construction asbestos standards and is accepted nationwide. You receive a printable certificate of completion that documents your awareness-level training. Employers across all 50 U.S. states accept this training for Class IV asbestos awareness compliance. Note: this awareness course does not qualify workers to perform asbestos abatement (Class I, II, or III work), which requires additional specialized training.
