Motorized Pallet Truck Safety

What Is Motorized Pallet Truck Safety Course?

100% Online
Self-Paced

Mobile Friendly

MARCOM’s Motorized Pallet Truck Safety course is an online training program designed for employees who operate motorized pallet trucks, commonly known as “walkies” and “walkie riders,” in the workplace. The course discusses the hazards that can be associated with these types of powered pallet trucks and explains the procedures and equipment that employees can use to avoid them.

Pallet trucks are more agile and easier to handle than a forklift, and when palletized loads need to be moved around a workplace, walkies and walkie riders can do a great job. But as with all material handling equipment, pallet trucks can create serious hazards if they are misused, leading to severe injuries and even fatalities. Areas covered in the course include walkies and walkie riders, safe truck operation, moving a load with a pallet truck, and working on loading docks and inclines.

The course is 100% online, fully self-paced, and accessible on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Motorized Pallet Truck Safety.

The Motorized Pallet Truck Safety course is an online training program that discusses the hazards associated with motorized pallet trucks (walkies and walkie riders) and explains the procedures and equipment that employees can use to avoid them. The course covers safe truck operation, moving loads, and working on loading docks and inclines.
A walkie is a motorized pallet truck that the operator walks behind while controlling the truck with a handle or tiller. A walkie rider includes a small platform that allows the operator to ride on the back of the truck while operating it. Both types are covered in this course.
The course covers the types and capabilities of walkies and walkie riders, safe truck operation procedures, moving a load with a pallet truck, and working safely on loading docks and inclines. The course is divided into logical sections so information is easily understood and retained.

Yes. The course is accessible on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Your progress saves automatically on the same device, so you can pause and resume at any time.
Upon completing the course, you should understand the design and capabilities of motorized pallet trucks, know the hazards that can be associated with using a pallet truck in a workplace, and know how to move loads safely with a pallet truck in different work situations.
OSHA classifies motorized pallet trucks as powered industrial trucks under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178. Under this standard, employers must ensure that each operator of a powered industrial truck is competent to operate the equipment safely, which requires formal training and evaluation. This course provides the formal instruction component of that training requirement.
Motorized pallet trucks (walkies and walkie riders) are more agile and easier to handle than forklifts. They are designed primarily for moving palletized loads at ground level or low heights. Forklifts have higher lifting capacity and can stack loads at greater heights. Both types of equipment require separate training and certification.
Common hazards include collisions with pedestrians, racks, or other equipment; foot and ankle injuries from the truck rolling over the operator’s feet; pinch points between the truck and stationary objects; unstable loads tipping over; and incidents on loading docks and inclines where the truck can be difficult to control. The course covers procedures to prevent these hazards.
This course is provided by MARCOM in partnership with eTraining. MARCOM uses a combination of audio, full-motion video, text, and colorful graphics to deliver interactive safety and regulatory compliance training.
