Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the DOT “Reasonable Suspicion” Testing for Managers and Supervisors (Part II).

Part II of the DOT Reasonable Suspicion Testing course teaches managers and supervisors how to recognize signs of alcohol misuse, understand the drug and alcohol testing process (including the new oral fluids testing option), properly approach an employee suspected of impairment, remove employees from safety-sensitive duties, and manage the return-to-duty process.
Part II is designed for the same managers and supervisors who are required to complete Part I. Under 49 CFR Part 382, supervisors must receive at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse, which is the focus of Part II. Both parts are required to meet the DOT’s 2-hour reasonable suspicion training requirement.
Part II takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes to complete. It is fully self-paced, so you can pause and resume at your convenience. You have 6 months from enrollment to finish. Progress saves automatically on the same device.
Oral fluids testing is a newer drug testing method that uses a saliva sample instead of urine. The DOT has authorized oral fluids testing as an alternative specimen collection method for certain drug tests. Part II of this course covers how oral fluids testing works and when it may be used in the reasonable suspicion testing process.
Part II covers the behavioral signs of alcohol misuse, the physical signs of alcohol misuse, how to approach an employee suspected of impairment, drug and alcohol testing basics, how drug and alcohol tests are conducted (including the oral fluids testing method), the removal from work process, and the return-to-duty process.
The DOT requires both Part I (controlled substances, approximately 60 minutes) and Part II (alcohol misuse, approximately 60 minutes) to satisfy the full 2-hour training requirement. While they can be taken in either order, Part I provides the foundational overview of DOT regulations and the reasonable suspicion concept that Part II builds upon.
Yes. Upon passing the final exam with a score of 70% or higher, you can immediately print a certificate of completion for Part II. Combined with your Part I certificate, this documents that you have met the DOT’s 2-hour reasonable suspicion training requirement.
Yes. The course is accessible on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Progress saves automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume where you left off.
No. This course provides a printable certificate of completion. It does not include a DOL or OSHA card. This training satisfies DOT/FMCSA requirements, not OSHA Outreach requirements.
