Fall Protection for the Competent Person

What Is eTraining's Fall Protection for the Competent Person Course?

100% Online

eTraining’s Fall Protection for the Competent Person course is an online training program designed for supervisors and workers with safety responsibilities on job sites where fall hazards exist. The course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1926.500, the standard for fall protection in construction, and provides comprehensive training on fall protection systems, hazard recognition, rescue procedures, and competent person responsibilities.

The U.S. Department of Labor lists falls as one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational death in the workplace today. Any time an employee is working at a height of 6 feet or more, that worker needs to be aware of proper fall protection practices and use proper fall protection equipment. To help ensure that workers adhere to proper safety precautions, OSHA has mandated that a competent person be present at every job site.

A competent person is defined by OSHA as a designated person with sufficient experience and knowledge to recognize fall hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and who has the ability to shut down the worksite until any hazards are corrected. The competent person should be the most knowledgeable person about fall protection on site. This course goes beyond the basic awareness level of introductory courses and into details necessary when learning not just how to protect yourself, but what it takes to create a safe working environment for those you may be responsible for. If your needs to not require a full, competent person level course, we also offer an awareness level Fall Protection Training Course.

The course is 100% online, fully self-paced, and accessible on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Fall Protection for the Competent Person.

Fall Protection for the Competent Person training is an OSHA-compliant safety program covering 29 CFR 1926.500. It provides approximately 4 to 5 hours of instruction on fall protection systems, hazard recognition, warning line and controlled access zones, fall protection plans, equipment selection and inspection, rescue procedures, and competent person responsibilities. The course is designed for supervisors who can identify fall hazards and take corrective action. There are four recognized levels of fall protection training: awareness training for basic hazard recognition, authorized/user training for workers using fall protection equipment, competent person training for supervisors who identify hazards and take corrective action, and qualified person training for engineers who design fall protection systems. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion.
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.500 requires that a competent person be present on every job site where fall hazards exist. Workers who need this training include designated competent persons for fall protection, construction supervisors and foremen on sites with work at heights of 6 feet or more, safety officers overseeing fall protection programs, workers responsible for selecting and inspecting fall protection equipment, and anyone with authority to implement and enforce fall protection procedures. The competent person must have sufficient experience and knowledge to recognize fall hazards, correct unsafe conditions, and has the ability to shut down the worksite until hazards are corrected.
The course requires approximately 4 to 5 hours of instruction time. Because it is self-paced, most students complete it within one week. You can complete the training over multiple sessions at your convenience. Progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and resume on the same device at any time.
Fall Protection for the Competent Person training is a 4 to 5 hour course designed for supervisors and designated competent persons who need in-depth knowledge of fall protection systems, equipment inspection, rescue planning, and supervisory responsibilities. Fall Protection Awareness training is a shorter course designed for workers who need basic knowledge of fall hazards and how to use fall protection equipment but do not have supervisory or competent person responsibilities. The competent person course goes beyond basic awareness to provide the detailed knowledge necessary to create a safe working environment for others.
The course covers facts about falls, types of falls, and factors that affect falls, fall protection versus fall prevention, categories and classes of fall safety protection and equipment, purpose and scope of OSHA 29 CFR 1926.500, when fall protection is needed including ladders, scaffolds, and falls from buildings, definitions and terminology, fall protection systems including guardrail systems, safety net systems, personal fall arrest systems, positioning device systems, warning line systems, controlled access zones, leading edge work, and safety monitoring systems, fall protection program development using a seven-step program including policy and scope, identifying fall hazards, methods of protection, education and training, inspection and maintenance, program administration and audits, and written program requirements, residential construction fall protection requirements, fall protection rescue including safety monitoring duties, suspension trauma, symptoms of orthostatic intolerance, rescue planning, rescue equipment, rescue training, rescue personnel, rescue procedures including self-rescue and hoist line rescue, and competent person responsibilities including recognizing fall hazards, strategy selection, fall prevention systems, equipment training and inspection, employee training, equipment selection and maintenance, fall protection plan development, visual inspection procedures for harnesses, lanyards, safety nets, and covers, and emergency response. The course is divided into 5 parts with 9 units covering these topics comprehensively.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass the course. Knowledge check quizzes throughout the course help prepare you for the final exam but do not count toward your grade. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can review the material and retake the exam.

Any time an employee is working at a height of 6 feet or more, that worker needs to be aware of proper fall protection practices and use proper fall protection equipment. The competent person must ensure that appropriate fall protection systems are in place for all work at these heights.
