Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Electrical Safety for the Competent Person.

Electrical Safety for the Competent Person training is an 8-hour OSHA-compliant safety program covering electrical hazard recognition, wiring design and protection, wiring methods, special purpose equipment, hazardous classifications, work practices, inspections, and competent person responsibilities. It provides instruction on identifying potential electrical hazards, proper means of working around hazards, protection methods, lockout/tagout procedures, grounding, and equipment safety for both less than and more than 600 volts. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion.
OSHA requires competent persons on job sites where electrical hazards are present. Workers who need this training include designated competent persons for electrical work, electrical supervisors and foremen, safety officers overseeing electrical operations, maintenance supervisors responsible for electrical systems, and workers responsible for implementing electrical safety programs and lockout/tagout procedures. The competent person must be capable of identifying electrical hazards and has the authority to take prompt corrective action.
The course requires approximately 8 hours of instruction time. Because it is self-paced, most students complete it within one to two weeks. You can complete the training over multiple sessions at your convenience. Progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and resume on the same device at any time.
The course covers introduction to electrical safety including definitions, electricity basics, electrical hazards, shock, electrocution, injuries, burns, falls, hazard controls, PPE, tool safety, lockout procedures, work practices, grounding, and GFCI protection, general requirements including approval, examination and installation of equipment, working space and clearances for equipment less than and more than 600 volts, wiring design and protection including grounded and grounding conductors, branch circuits, outside conductors and lamps, disconnecting means, overcurrent protection, and grounding connections, wiring methods including general requirements, portable electric equipment, cabinets and boxes, switchboards and panelboards, conductors for general wiring, flexible cords and cables, and equipment for general use, specific purpose equipment including cranes and hoists, elevators, electric welders, and x-ray equipment, hazardous classifications including NEC Classes I, II, and III locations, electrical installations, and equipment marking, special systems including systems over 600 volts, communication systems, and remote control circuits, safety-related work practices including lockout/tagout procedures, environmental considerations, and battery safety, and competent person responsibilities including qualifications, employer responsibilities, hazard control, safe work practices, electrical safety programs, AEGCP (Assured Equipment Grounding Conductor Program), inspection processes, training requirements, and recordkeeping. The course is divided into 9 parts with comprehensive coverage.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass the course. Knowledge check quizzes throughout the 9 parts help prepare you for the final exam but do not count toward your grade. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can review the material and retake the exam.
Yes. The course includes comprehensive coverage of lockout/tagout procedures as part of safety-related work practices. Topics include the purpose of lockout/tagout, electrical hazards requiring lockout, devices and tagout procedures, responsibilities of authorized and affected employees, engineering controls and work practices, equipment to be locked out or tagged out, the lockout process including group lockout/tagout, training requirements, testing procedures, and written plan requirements. Lockout/tagout is a critical component of electrical safety for competent persons.
Yes. eTraining offers an Electrical Safety for the Competent Person course in Spanish. The Spanish version covers identical content, meets the same safety training requirements, and results in the same certificate of completion upon passing.
An Assured Equipment Grounding Conductor Program (AEGCP) is an OSHA-required program covered in the competent person training. The AEGCP ensures that equipment grounding conductors are installed and maintained properly on construction sites. The program includes requirements for testing cord sets and receptacles, testing procedures and intervals, recordkeeping of test results, and visual inspection of equipment. The competent person is responsible for implementing and overseeing the AEGCP on job sites where it is required.
The electrical safety competent person is responsible for identifying existing and predictable electrical hazards, selecting appropriate control strategies for electrical exposures, implementing hazard controls including isolation, insulation, guarding, and grounding, verifying that lockout/tagout procedures are followed, conducting inspections of equipment, cords, and work areas, ensuring workers use appropriate personal protective equipment, implementing and overseeing the Assured Equipment Grounding Conductor Program when required, providing worker training on electrical hazards and safe work practices, maintaining training and inspection records, and taking prompt corrective action to eliminate electrical hazards. The competent person has the authority to stop work until unsafe conditions are corrected.
