EHS KPI Tracking

EHS KPI Tracking

Course Overview

EHS KPI Tracking is a five module online course on measuring safety and environmental performance. It covers leading and lagging indicators, the TRIR and DART calculations, data quality, targets and dashboards, root cause analysis and reporting.

  • Calculate TRIR the way OSHA defines the rate: recordables times 200,000, divided by the hours actually worked.
  • Tell a leading indicator from a lagging one, then build a set that has some of each rather than all of one.
  • Keep the records the rates come from: five years for the 300 Log and the 301 forms, under 29 CFR 1904.33.
  • 90 minutes, self-paced
  • Instant certificate
  • Mobile friendly

EHS KPI Tracking or Groundwork in OSHA Itself?

The course assumes you already know what a recordable is. Someone new to the agency side may want that first.

  • EHS KPI Tracking. Measurement and analysis: TRIR and DART, SMART metrics, benchmarking, root cause and reporting.
  • Introduction to OSHA. The agency, worker rights, employer duties, inspections and how recordkeeping fits in. View the Introduction to OSHA
  • Developing a Health and Safety Plan. Building the written programme, calculating incident rates and understanding how EMR affects insurance. View the Developing a Health and Safety Plan

Introduction to OSHA gives you the vocabulary. This course turns it into rates, targets and dashboards.

How EHS KPI Tracking Turns a Number Into a Decision

Most sites already count incidents. The course is about the step after that, where a count becomes a rate, a rate becomes a comparison and a comparison becomes an action.

  • The rate. TRIR is recordable incidents multiplied by 200,000 and divided by hours worked. The constant stands for one hundred full time employees working two thousand hours each, so the result reads as incidents per hundred employees per year. Eight recordables against 500,000 hours is a TRIR of 3.2.
  • The benchmark. A rate on its own says nothing. The course sends you to your own history and to the Bureau of Labor Statistics figures for your industry, because 3.2 is good in one sector and poor in another.
  • The segment. Then segment. A facility average hides the one department running at 8.5, and the course's worked example finds most of that department's incidents in a single task, manual pallet loading.
  • The cause. Only then does root cause analysis start, using 5 Whys, a fishbone diagram or FMEA, followed by corrective action tracked through Plan Do Check Act.

The course is strict that the point of the measurement is the decision at the end of it, not the report in the middle.

The course teaches participants how to measure, manage, and improve jobsite safety performance using data-driven tools and metrics such as TRIR, DART rates, and near-miss reporting systems.

This course is designed for construction field leaders, EHS coordinators, safety managers, supervisors, and operations leaders who need to track and improve safety and environmental performance. It is also suitable for anyone responsible for near-miss reporting, root cause analysis, or building safety dashboards.

Lagging indicators measure past safety performance, such as the number of injuries or incidents that have already occurred. Leading indicators measure proactive safety activities, such as safety inspections, near-miss reports, and training completion, which help predict and prevent future incidents. The EHS KPI Tracking course covers both types and how to use them effectively.

This course is designed for construction field leaders, EHS coordinators, safety managers, supervisors, and operations leaders who need to track and improve safety and environmental performance. It is also suitable for anyone responsible for near-miss reporting, root cause analysis, or building safety dashboards.

The course covers leading versus lagging indicators, TRIR (Total Recordable Incident Rate) and DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred) rate calculations, near-miss reporting systems, environmental performance indicators, data collection best practices, dashboard design, trend analysis, root cause analysis basics, corrective action planning, and continuous improvement strategies.

TRIR stands for Total Recordable Incident Rate. It is a standard safety metric used to measure the frequency of recordable workplace injuries and illnesses relative to the number of hours worked. The EHS KPI Tracking course includes instruction on TRIR calculations, DART rates, and how to interpret these figures to assess safety performance.

The course takes approximately 90 minutes to complete. It is fully self-paced and broken into four modules with knowledge check quizzes throughout. Progress saves automatically so participants can complete the course over multiple sessions on the same device.

The course teaches participants how to collect accurate safety data, build meaningful performance dashboards, identify trends, and translate insights into corrective action. By applying data-driven decision-making to safety management, organizations can identify risks earlier, respond more effectively, and drive continuous improvement in workplace safety outcomes.
