OSHA 30 Hour Construction

OSHA 30 Hour Construction

Course Overview

OSHA 30 Construction training teaches foremen and safety officers to spot and control site hazards and provides a proven path to receiving an OSHA student completion card from the Department of Labor (DOL)/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program. This 30-hour online course covers falls, electrocution, excavations, cranes and PPE under 29 CFR 1926, the construction safety and health standards and is delivered through ClickSafety, an OSHA-authorized online Outreach provider.

  • Covers the Focus Four: falls, power lines, falling loads and trench collapse, with falls given the most time.
  • Trains the people who plan excavations, crane lifts and confined space entries on what to check beforehand.
  • Ends with a Certificate of Completion and an official Department of Labor 30-hour construction card by mail.

Note: This course is delivered in English. A Spanish version of the same course is available and earns the same Department of Labor 30 hour construction card. For Spanish, take the OSHA 30 Hour Construction – Spanish.

OSHA's own wording is that the 30-hour class suits supervisors or workers who carry some safety responsibility. If you are the one deciding how many seats to buy and for whom, start with the situations below rather than with job titles.

  • Construction supervisors and foremen responsible for jobsite safety.
  • Safety managers and officers overseeing construction work.
  • Supervisors who need OSHA 30 to meet state or local requirements.
  • NYC supervisors who need OSHA 30 as part of Site Safety Training (SST).
  • Workers required to hold OSHA 30 by a general contractor or project owner.
  • Supervisory personnel working on public projects that require OSHA 30.
  • Crew leaders covered by union or project labor agreement requirements.
  • Workers moving from field roles into supervisory positions.
  • Supervisors responsible for high-hazard work such as excavations, lifts, or confined spaces.
  • Employers deciding which team members need OSHA 30 instead of OSHA 10.

The course is scoped to construction work under 29 CFR 1926, the construction safety and health standards. These are the operations where the 30-hour card comes up.

  • Excavation and demolition contractors.
  • Trenching and underground utility crews.
  • Steel erection contractors.
  • Concrete and masonry contractors.
  • Crane and rigging operations.
  • Roadway and heavy civil construction.
  • Interior fit-out and renovation contractors.
  • Confined space operations.
  • Welding, cutting, and hot work.
  • General contractors managing multi-employer jobsites.

How OSHA Splits the 30 Hours of Construction Training

The shape of the course is fixed by OSHA, not by the provider. Three blocks account for the whole of it.

  • 14 mandatory hours. OSHA's 2024 Outreach Training Program Construction Procedures set fourteen mandatory hours: Introduction to OSHA at one hour, Managing Safety and Health at two, the Focus Four at six, Personal Protective Equipment at two, Health Hazards in Construction at two, and Stairways and Ladders at one.
  • 12 elective hours. Inside the Focus Four block, falls carry a minimum of 1 hour and 30 minutes under the same procedures. That is the single largest named allocation in the course, and it tracks the hazard that OSHA's construction standard treats most strictly at 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(1).
  • 4 optional hours. The elective block is at least twelve hours drawn from OSHA's published list, with at least six topics presented and no topic shorter than 30 minutes. Excavations, scaffolds, cranes, confined spaces, steel erection, welding, ergonomics and powered industrial vehicles all sit on that list.
  • 30 hours minimum. Up to four hours are optional, which OSHA's procedures allow a provider to spend on other construction hazards or policies, or on expanding a required or elective topic. Here the optional hours go on orientation, unsafe behaviour, NFPA 70E and cultural change.

Instructional time must be a minimum of 30 hours under OSHA's procedures, so the elective and optional choices are where one provider's 30 hour course differs from another's.
