Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Head Protection Safety.

Head protection safety training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to identify head hazards in the workplace, understand the types and classes of hard hats, and select and use head protection properly. eTraining’s course provides approximately 30 minutes of instruction covering OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 and ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standards, including types of head hazards, hard hat types and classes, proper fitting and wearing, inspection, care, maintenance, and replacement criteria. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 requires employers to ensure that each affected employee wears a protective helmet when working in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(f) requires employers to train each employee who is required to use PPE, including head protection. Training must cover when PPE is necessary, what type is required, how to properly wear and adjust it, its limitations, and its proper care and maintenance. Retraining is required when workplace conditions or PPE types change.
The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it in a single session at your convenience. Most students finish in one sitting. You have 6 months from your enrollment date to complete all coursework. Progress is saved automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
Hard hats are classified by Type and Class. Type I hard hats protect against impacts to the top of the head only. Type II hard hats protect against both top and lateral (side) impacts. Class E (Electrical) hard hats are tested to withstand 20,000 volts of electrical contact. Class G (General) hard hats are tested to withstand 2,200 volts. Class C (Conductive) hard hats offer no electrical protection but provide lightweight ventilated comfort. Your employer’s hazard assessment determines which Type and Class combination is required for your work environment.
The course covers: types of head hazards in the workplace (falling objects, bumping hazards, electrical contact, flying debris); OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 requirements; ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standard for industrial head protection; hard hat Types (I and II) and Classes (E, G, and C); proper fitting and wearing of hard hats; inspection procedures for damage, cracks, and wear; care, cleaning, and storage; replacement criteria and service life; and the employer’s hazard assessment responsibilities. The course is divided into 2 parts with knowledge-check quizzes.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. The course includes knowledge-check quizzes that do not count toward your final grade but help prepare you for the exam. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.
Yes. eTraining’s Head Protection Safety course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 and ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 standards and is accepted nationwide. You receive a printable certificate of completion that documents your training. Employers across all 50 U.S. states accept this training as part of their PPE compliance programs.
Yes. The course works on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Your progress is saved automatically on the same device you are using, allowing you to pause and pick up where you left off. Note: you must continue on the same device to retain your saved progress.
Hard hat manufacturers typically recommend replacement every 2 to 5 years, depending on the model and work environment. The suspension (webbing inside the helmet) should be replaced every 12 months or sooner if damaged, stretched, or heavily soiled. Hard hats should be replaced immediately if they sustain an impact, show visible cracks or dents, become brittle, or have been exposed to chemicals that may degrade the shell material. Always follow your manufacturer’s recommendations and your employer’s replacement policy.
There is no federally mandated expiration date for head protection safety training certificates. However, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(f) requires retraining when workplace conditions change, when PPE types change, or when an employee demonstrates inadequate knowledge of PPE use. Refresher training is recommended to maintain current knowledge of head protection standards and best practices.
