Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Fire Watch – General Industry and Construction.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252(d)(1)(vi) requires that fire watchers be trained in the use of fire extinguishing equipment. Any worker who may be designated as a fire watch during hot work operations should complete this training. This includes workers on construction sites, in manufacturing plants, at refineries, in shipyards, and in any facility where welding, cutting, or brazing is performed. Employers are responsible for ensuring that fire watch personnel are properly trained before they are assigned fire watch duties.
The course covers: OSHA regulations for fire watch (29 CFR 1910.252, 1910.38); the role, duties, and responsibilities of a fire watch person; when a fire watch is required during hot work; fire prevention and hazard identification during welding, cutting, and brazing; the 30-minute minimum post-hot-work watch period; types of fire extinguishers and their proper use; the hot work permit system; emergency response procedures; and the relationship between fire watch requirements and the employer’s Emergency Action Plan.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.
Yes. The course works on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Your progress is saved automatically on the same device you are using, allowing you to pause and pick up where you left off. Note: you must continue on the same device to retain your saved progress.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252(d)(1)(v) requires that a fire watch be maintained for at least 30 minutes after welding, cutting, or brazing operations are completed. This is because sparks, slag, and heat from hot work can smolder in combustible materials and ignite a fire after the work has stopped. The fire watch must remain in the area, alert and ready to use extinguishing equipment, for the full 30-minute period.
There is no specific federal expiration date for fire watch training certificates. However, OSHA requires that fire watch personnel be trained and competent in the use of fire extinguishing equipment. Many employers and refineries require fire watch training to be renewed every 1–2 years. Check with your employer or the site owner for specific renewal requirements.
Fire watch training is a safety education program that teaches workers the role and responsibilities of a fire watch person during hot work operations (welding, cutting, brazing, and other spark-producing activities). eTraining’s course provides approximately 1–2 hours of instruction covering OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 and 29 CFR 1910.38 standards, including the fire watch person’s duties, fire prevention during hot work, hazard identification, the 30-minute post-hot-work watch period, fire extinguisher types and use, emergency procedures, and the hot work permit system. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
Yes. eTraining’s Fire Watch course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252 and 29 CFR 1910.38 standards and is accepted nationwide. You receive a printable certificate of completion that documents your training. Employers, general contractors, and refineries across all 50 U.S. states accept this training for fire watch compliance during hot work operations.

A fire watch is a designated person whose sole responsibility during hot work operations is to watch for fires and be ready to use fire extinguishing equipment. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252, a fire watch is required whenever welding, cutting, brazing, or other spark-producing work is performed in locations where more than a minor fire could develop, where combustible materials are closer than 35 feet, where wall or floor openings could allow sparks to reach combustible materials, or where combustible materials on the other side of walls or ceilings could be ignited by conduction or radiation.
