2008 NEC Code Changes: Article 300 – Article 410, Conductors, Receptacles & More

The National Electrical Code® has been extensively revised for 2008, and contains a lot of new information to digest. This 2-hour interactive online course is intended to familiarize the reader with some of the major changes contained in the 2008 NEC®, and is suitable for anyone exposed to the NEC at any level. More changes are covered in our other NEC courses, which have been broken down into palatable 2-hour doses. The Code revisions we will address apply to all types of occupancies: residential, commercial, and industrial. In this course – the third of four, we will go over Article 300 – Wiring Methods; Article 310 – Conductors for General Wiring; Article 406 – Receptacles, Cord Connectors and Attachment Plugs (Caps), Article 408 (Switchboards & Panelboards) and Article 410 – Luminaires, Lampholders, and Lamps. Learning Objectives

  • Describe how the 2008 Code changes affect wiring methods (Article 300), conductors (Article 310), receptacles, cord connectors, and attachment plugs (Article 406); switchboards and panelboards (Article 408); and luminaires, lampholders, and lamps (Article 410)
  • Define the ambient temperature adjustment for conduits exposed to sunlight on or above rooftops, with the aid of New Subsection 310.15(B)(2)(c) and its accompanying Table of the same name
  • Recall that the 2008 Code revision cycle has deleted Section 408.34, Classification of Panelboards, and combined them into one Section encompassing both lighting and equipment panelboards
  • Discuss the fact that the terms “fixture” and “fixtures” are no longer used in the Code and the changes in what it means for luminaires and other lighting to be “Listed.”
