OSHA 40 certification is the 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification. It is the training OSHA requires under standard 29 CFR 1910.120 for workers with the most exposure to hazardous substances: the people doing hazardous waste cleanup, treatment, storage, disposal, or emergency response. A worker earns it by finishing a 40-hour course and passing the final exam, and the certification is valid for 12 months.

Provided by e-Training Inc., an online workplace-safety training provider that has certified 50,000+ workers over 14+ years. Course built to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120; completion earns continuing-education credit recognized by ABIH and BCSP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training Online.

40-Hour HAZWOPER training is an OSHA-required safety course for workers who may be exposed to hazardous substances or hazardous waste at their workplace, such as hazardous waste cleanup, TSD facilities, and emergency response. Required by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120, this training covers hazard identification, personal protective equipment, decontamination, emergency response procedures, and safe work practices at hazardous waste sites. It is the foundational HAZWOPER training level for general site workers.
OSHA requires 40-Hour HAZWOPER training for general site workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste operations, workers at RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the principal U.S. federal law governing the disposal of solid and hazardous waste) corrective action sites, employees at treatment/storage/disposal (TSD) facilities, emergency response personnel, and supervisors managing hazardous waste operations. Workers with limited exposure may qualify for the 24-Hour HAZWOPER course instead.
The course requires 40 hours of instruction time across 10 modules. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it over several days or weeks at your convenience. Most students finish in 1–2 weeks of focused study. Progress saves automatically so you can pause and resume on the same device.
40-Hour HAZWOPER is for general site workers with the highest potential exposure to hazardous substances. 24-Hour HAZWOPER is for workers with limited exposure who are not involved in direct cleanup operations. 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher is an annual requirement for anyone who has already completed 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER training to maintain their certification.
Yes. HAZWOPER certification is valid for 12 months from the date of completion. OSHA requires all HAZWOPER-trained workers to complete an 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher course annually to maintain their certification. If you miss the annual refresher deadline, you may be required to retake the full 40-Hour course.
Yes. Online HAZWOPER training is a valid option recognized by OSHA for meeting the instructional training requirements under 29 CFR 1910.120. However, OSHA also requires 3 days of supervised, hands-on field experience provided by the employer following online training completion. This online course fulfills the classroom instruction portion of the training.
Per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3)(i), employers must provide 3 days (24 hours) of supervised field experience at the work site following completion of the 40-Hour HAZWOPER course. This must be conducted under an experienced supervisor and cover site-specific hazards, PPE, and emergency procedures relevant to your workplace.
The course covers 10 modules including: introduction to HAZWOPER and OSHA regulations, hazardous substance properties, toxicology and health effects, personal protective equipment (PPE), respiratory protection, site control and characterization, decontamination procedures, emergency response, confined space entry at HAZWOPER sites, and monitoring procedures and equipment.
Yes. eTraining offers the complete 40-Hour HAZWOPER course in Spanish. The Spanish version covers the same curriculum, meets the same OSHA requirements under 29 CFR 1910.120, and provides the same HAZWOPER certificate upon completion.
Yes. HAZWOPER certification from eTraining is accepted at hazardous waste sites nationwide. However, each site has unique hazards, so OSHA requires employers to also provide site-specific training covering the particular hazardous substances, PPE requirements, and emergency procedures for that location.
Yes. Upon passing the final exam with a score of 70% or higher, you can immediately print a certificate of completion. This certificate serves as proof of training for your employer.
Yes. The course is accessible on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Progress saves automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume where you left off.
