Which Drug and Alcohol Awareness Course Do You Need?
eTraining offers two versions of drug and alcohol awareness training: one for employees and one for the people who supervise them.
- Drug And Alcohol Awareness For Supervisors. A 1-hour course for anyone who assigns and reviews other people's work. It adds prevention programs, EAP referral, intervention, handling an impaired worker and return to duty.
- Drug And Alcohol Awareness For Employees. A 30-minute course for employees. It covers the laws behind drug-free workplace policies, warning signs of substance abuse and where to get confidential help. View the Drug And Alcohol Awareness For Employees
Supervisors, managers and team leads take the Supervisors course. Everyone else takes the Employees course. Many employers train both groups on the same policy.
What Is a Supervisor's Role When Substance Abuse Is Suspected?
Supervisors monitor work and conduct every day, which often makes them the first to notice a problem. The course lays out exactly what that role includes.
- Watch performance and conduct. Assign, review and appraise work, and note patterns in attendance, performance, relationships and behavior.
- Leave the diagnosis to the EAP. The course teaches supervisors to address the performance or conduct problem and let the EAP counselor assess the cause.
- Refer and document. Tell the employee about the EAP, meet privately, explain the consequences and record every problem or improvement.
- Act fast when someone is impaired. Remove the worker from safety-sensitive duties, don't let them drive home, and write down what happened and why.
Supervisors of DOT-regulated employees also need separate reasonable suspicion training, such as the 60 minutes on alcohol and 60 minutes on drugs required by 49 CFR 382.603.
