Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Crane Signal Person Course.

Crane signal person training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to properly direct crane operations using standard hand signals and voice commands. The course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1419 signal person qualification requirements, crane types and classifications, hazard recognition, load movement procedures, and communication protocols. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion and are prepared for the NCCCO certification examination.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1419, any worker designated as a signal person on a construction site where cranes and derricks are in use must be qualified through either third-party certification or employer evaluation. Signal persons must demonstrate knowledge of standard hand signals and the ability to communicate effectively with crane operators. Employers are responsible for ensuring all signal persons meet these qualification requirements before performing signal duties.
The course is approximately 5 - 6 hours in length and is divided into 6 parts. Because it is fully self-paced, you can complete it over multiple sessions at your convenience. Progress saves automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
A signal person is responsible for directing the crane operator during load movement using standardized hand signals or voice communication. A rigger is responsible for attaching (rigging) loads to the crane for lifting. These are separate roles with different OSHA qualification requirements under 29 CFR 1926.1400, Subpart CC. Some workers may fill both roles, but each requires its own training and qualification.
You must score 70% or higher on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate. Knowledge check quizzes are provided throughout the 6 course parts to help prepare you for the final exam. If you do not pass, you may reattempt the final exam.
Yes. eTraining fully endorses the NCCCO national certification program and this course is designed to prepare candidates for the NCCCO Signal Person certification examinations. The course covers the knowledge areas tested on the NCCCO exam, including standard hand signals, crane types, hazard recognition, and site operations. The NCCCO exam itself is administered separately by NCCCO.
