OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1) requires employers to provide one or more methods of machine guarding to protect operators and other employees from hazards created by the point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips, and sparks. While 1910.212 does not specify a separate training requirement, OSHA’s General Duty Clause and enforcement guidance require employers to ensure that workers who operate or work near machines understand the hazards and the proper use of guards and safeguarding devices. Training is essential for compliance.
The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it in a single session at your convenience. Most students finish in one sitting.  The course covers four primary types of machine guards: fixed guards (permanently attached barriers that provide a physical enclosure around the hazard); interlocked guards (guards connected to the machine’s power source that shut down the machine when the guard is opened or removed); adjustable guards (flexible barriers that allow the operator to adjust the opening size based on the material being processed); and self-adjusting guards (barriers that automatically move to accommodate the material while maintaining protection). The course also covers safeguarding devices such as presence-sensing devices, two-hand controls, gates, and restraint systems.
The course covers: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 general requirements for machine guarding; definitions related to machine guarding safety; types of hazardous mechanical motions (rotating, reciprocating, transversing) and actions (cutting, punching, shearing, bending); point of operation hazards; power transmission apparatus hazards (gears, pulleys, belts, chains, flywheels); types of machine guards and their applications; safeguarding devices and their applications; requirements for guards (prevent contact, be secure, not create new hazards, not interfere with operation); common machine guarding violations; and how to report violations to your employer or OSHA. The course is divided into 2 units with knowledge-check quizzes.
  You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. The course includes knowledge-check quizzes that do not count toward your final grade but help prepare you for the exam. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.
