Frequently Asked Questions

Confined Space Supervisor training is an 8-hour OSHA-compliant safety program covering CFR 1910.146 for general industry permit-required confined space operations. It provides instruction on the role of the entry supervisor, including hazard identification, permit procedures, atmospheric monitoring, worker protection, emergency response, and supervisor responsibilities. The course covers the knowledge and skills needed to authorize confined space entries, verify safety precautions, and supervise entry operations. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion.

OSHA CFR 1910.146 requires employers to designate entry supervisors for permit-required confined space operations. Workers who need this training include anyone designated as an entry supervisor who authorizes confined space entries, safety officers responsible for confined space programs, site supervisors overseeing workers entering tanks, vaults, silos, or other permit-required confined spaces, and facility managers responsible for ensuring safe entry procedures. The entry supervisor has critical responsibilities that require specialized training beyond basic confined space awareness.

The course requires 8 hours of instruction time. Because it is self-paced, most students complete it within one to two weeks. You can complete the training over multiple sessions at your convenience. Progress is saved automatically, so you can stop and resume on the same device at any time.

Confined Space Supervisor training is an 8-hour course designed for entry supervisors who authorize and oversee confined space entries. It covers permit procedures, atmospheric monitoring, supervisor responsibilities, emergency response coordination, and comprehensive safety protocols. Confined Space Awareness training is a 2-hour course designed for workers who need basic knowledge of confined space hazards and entry procedures but do not have supervisory responsibilities. The supervisor course provides the in-depth knowledge necessary to authorize entries and manage confined space operations safely.

According to OSHA CFR 1910.146, a permit-required confined space (PRCS) is a confined space that has one or more of the following characteristics: contains or has a potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, contains a material that has the potential for engulfing an entrant, has an internal configuration such that an entrant could be trapped or asphyxiated by inwardly converging walls or by a floor which slopes downward and tapers to a smaller cross-section, or contains any other recognized serious safety or health hazard. Entry into permit-required confined spaces requires a written permit and specific safety procedures.

The entry supervisor is responsible for knowing the hazards that may be faced during entry including information on the mode, signs or symptoms, and consequences of exposure, verifying that all tests specified by the permit have been conducted and that all procedures and equipment are in place before endorsing the permit and allowing entry, terminating the entry and canceling the permit when entry operations are complete or if unacceptable entry conditions exist, verifying that rescue services are available and that the means for summoning them are operable, and removing unauthorized individuals who enter or attempt to enter the permit space during entry operations. The supervisor must be trained to fulfill these duties.

Yes. The course includes a comprehensive downloadable forms package with templates and samples you can use immediately to implement a confined space program at your workplace. Materials include a Confined Space Entry Program template, sample Confined Space Entry Permit, sample Training Certificate and Verification, sample Non-permit Confined Space Certificate, Training Checklist for Personnel, Hot Work Permit Program, sample Hot Work Permit, sample After Action Report, and supervisor checklists. These materials help ensure proper recordkeeping in accordance with OSHA regulations.

You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass the course. Knowledge check quizzes throughout the 8 parts of the course help prepare you for the final exam but do not count toward your grade. If you do not pass on the first attempt, you can review the material and retake the exam.

Yes. While taking the Confined Space Supervisor course, you have access to an instructor via email. Any questions you have about the material covered throughout the course can be emailed directly to questions@etraintoday.com and an instructor response is guaranteed within 12 hours. This provides expert support as you progress through the training.

Yes. eTraining offers the complete Confined Space Supervisor course in Spanish (Supervisor de Espacios Confinados). The Spanish version covers identical content, meets the same OSHA CFR 1910.146 requirements, includes the same downloadable forms and materials, and results in the same certificate of completion. The Spanish course also includes instructor access with guaranteed response times.

The course covers types of confined spaces and definitions, hazards including asphyxiation, chemical and atmospheric hazards, and physical hazards, hazard recognition using NFPA labels, OSHA labels, and Safety Data Sheets, regulations and responsibilities including determining permit-required status, responsibilities of entrants, attendants, supervisors, response personnel, and contractors, written program and permit requirements including PRCS program components, permit preparation, and hot work permits, the NIOSH Pocket Guide and terminology for atmospheric monitoring, safety controls including engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment, and air monitoring, welding and hot work procedures including gas welding, arc welding, and fire prevention, and emergency response and training including pre-planning, rescue procedures, and supervisor responsibilities. The course is divided into 8 main parts with comprehensive coverage of each topic.
