Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Hand Protection Safety.

Hand protection safety training is a safety education program that teaches workers how to identify hand hazards in the workplace, select the correct type of protective gloves, and use hand protection properly. eTraining’s course provides approximately 30 minutes of instruction covering OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 standards, including types of hand hazards, categories of protective gloves (chemical-resistant, cut-resistant, heat-resistant, electrical insulating, leather, general-purpose), proper selection based on hazard type, correct sizing and fit, and care and maintenance. Upon completion, participants receive a printable certificate of completion.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 requires employers to select and require employees to use appropriate hand protection when employees’ hands are exposed to hazards such as skin absorption of harmful substances, severe cuts or lacerations, severe abrasions, punctures, chemical burns, thermal burns, and harmful temperature extremes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(f) requires training on when PPE is necessary, what type is required, how to properly use it, its limitations, and proper care and maintenance.
The course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Because it is self-paced, you can complete it in a single session at your convenience. Most students finish in one sitting. You have 6 months from your enrollment date to complete all coursework. Progress is saved automatically on the same device, so you can stop and resume at any time.
The course covers several categories of protective gloves: chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile, latex, neoprene, butyl rubber, PVC) for protection from chemical exposure; cut-resistant gloves (Kevlar, metal mesh, high-performance polyethylene) for protection from sharp edges and blades; heat-resistant gloves for protection from thermal burns and hot surfaces; electrical insulating gloves for protection from electrical shock; leather gloves for general-purpose protection from abrasions and punctures; and disposable gloves for light chemical and biological protection. The course explains when each type is required.
The course covers: types of hand hazards in the workplace (chemical absorption, burns, cuts, punctures, abrasions, amputations); OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 requirements; types of protective gloves and their applications; proper selection of hand protection based on hazard type; correct sizing, fitting, and donning of gloves; care, cleaning, inspection, and storage; when to replace gloves; and the employer’s hazard assessment responsibilities. The course is divided into 2 parts with knowledge-check quizzes.
You must score at least 70% on the final exam to pass and receive your certificate of completion. The course includes knowledge-check quizzes that do not count toward your final grade but help prepare you for the exam. If you do not pass on your first attempt, you can retake the exam.
Yes. eTraining’s Hand Protection Safety course covers OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 standards for hand protection and is accepted nationwide. You receive a printable certificate of completion that documents your training. Employers across all 50 U.S. states accept this training as part of their PPE compliance programs.
Yes. The course works on desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Your progress is saved automatically on the same device you are using, allowing you to pause and pick up where you left off. Note: you must continue on the same device to retain your saved progress.
Gloves should be replaced when they show signs of wear such as thinning, holes, tears, cracks, or discoloration. Chemical-resistant gloves should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s breakthrough time recommendations, as chemicals can permeate the glove material over time even without visible damage. Disposable gloves should be discarded after each use. Always inspect gloves before each use and follow your employer’s replacement policy.
There is no federally mandated expiration date for hand protection safety training certificates. However, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(f) requires retraining when workplace conditions change, when PPE types change, or when an employee demonstrates inadequate knowledge of PPE use. Refresher training is recommended to maintain current knowledge of hand protection standards and best practices.
